U-Report is a free tool for community participation, designed to address issues that the population cares about. Once a U-Reporter has followed U-Report Global on Facebook messenger polls and alerts are sent via Direct Message and real-time responses are collected and mapped on this site. Results and ideas are shared back with the community. Issues polled include health, education, water, sanitation and hygiene, youth unemployment, HIV/AIDS, disease outbreaks and anything else people want to discuss.
All the individual messages you send to U-Report are confidential. Aggregated data (i.e. 55% of U-Reporters say they would get vaccinated if it is recommended to them) is used to connect young people with their representatives, improve UNICEF programmes and draw attention to urgent issues with national governments and the UN. NGOs, civil society and country leaders can see the information on the site to understand what the people want or need.
Registration is voluntary and U-Reporters incur no costs. There are 84 national U-Report programmes in addition to the global project and the number of people joining increases every day.
U-Report relies on volunteer community members serving as U-Reporters to provide information on issues in their communities to create change. In return, U-Reporters will receive important information and alerts around international issues. Together we create change.
What kind of information does U-Report handle?
In the registration process, we will ask you about the country you are in now, your age and gender. This information allows UNICEF and partners to disaggregate general by age, gender and country and focalize information that is relevant to you.
Where is my information stored?
Your answers to polls, interaction with chatbots and information collected during registration (country, age and gender) are stored on a RapidPro server, which keeps your information confidential and protected and allows U-Report to respond immediately to your messages.
Your answers can also be stored in the channel you use. For example, in the Facebook or WhatsApp conversation. If you participated in a poll on a sensitive topic, you might consider deleting the conversation to prevent someone else from taking your phone and accessing the conversation.
Does U-Report share my information with third parties?
Your personal information will never be shared with third parties. Only if we identify that you need urgent assistance, we may ask you if you agree to the sharing of your information.
General poll results may be shared with third parties. But this will only be done in an aggregate way and without showing your personal data, i.e. showing the percentage of people who answered YES to a question.
How do I stop being a U-Reporter and delete my data?
You have the right to delete your registration and stored data at any time. To do so, send QUIT to any of U-Report channels (Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp or Viber)
